Do Not Call Telephone Registry Update

E-mails currently making the rounds suggest that there is a need to call now and register your cell phone.  That is a misleading but a popular urban myth.  The current registry covers wired and wireless phones and applies to all telemarketers with the exception of certain nonprofit organizations.

Personal wireless phone subscribers have always been able to add their numbers to the national registry by going to www.donotcall.gov or by calling toll-free at 1-888-382-1222 from the phone number they wish to register. Registrations become effective within 31 days and are active for five years.

"There is no cutoff date or deadline for registrations," according to the FCC.

If you have placed your phone number on the national registry and you do receive unwanted telemarketing calls, hold your temper and get as much specific information about the callers as possible. That includes their names, the companies they work for and their phone numbers.

Then, contact the FCC toll-free at 1-888-225-5322, by e-mail at fccinfo@fcc.gov or via the Internet at www.fcc.gov/cgb/complaints.html.

You also can file a written complaint to the FCC's Consumer & Governmental Affairs Bureau, Consumer Inquiries and Complaint Division, 445 12th St. SW, Washington, DC 20554. Include your name, address, a phone number where you can be reached during the day and the phone number the telemarketer called to contact you.

For more information about the National Do-Not-Call Registry and the rules that enforce it, go to www.fcc.gov or www.ftc.gov. For more information about the proposed 411 directory the wireless phone industry is talking about, and is the probable source of the rumors on cell phone registry requirements go to www.qsent.com/wireless411.
